Our mission is to use communications strategies for policy change.

In a democratic society, informed debate is the cornerstone of good public policy.

The Communications Consortium Media Center seeks to influence public policy in ways that respect and support individual rights, healthy families, cultural diversity and a sustainable environment. Each of our public education campaigns focuses on the issue or policy change being sought, not on promoting individuals or organizations.

We believe collaboration among nonprofit groups sharing policy goals is an effective and efficient way to gain credibility and to influence public policy.

CCMC works to empower diverse and underrepresented communities to participate more fully in decisions about their lives.

After a new millennium and a communications revolution since our founding in 1988, we still hold firmly to these initial principles. While the tools of the trade have become more and more sophisticated, it is the commitment to and passion for fairness, equality and human rights shared by CCMC, partner organizations and funders that continues to be the foundation of our work.

CCMC was created in 1988 in Washington DC by veteran nonprofit communications and media specialists who understood that effective communications strategies are essential in order to turn ideas into public policy. CCMC's founders believed that a mastery of communications, especially outreach to media, is essential to the job of building a better society. We also realized that many nonprofit organizations do not have the capacity to put successful strategies for policy change into action.

Taking a cue from public interest law firms (and their tremendous victories on behalf of the environment and civil rights), CCMC’s founders created a public interest communications organization, a new way to mobilize resources in service to important issues. The goal was to create an institution capable of providing communications leadership to the public interest community over the long haul.

Time and again, CCMC's work has proven that with a clear mission and the right strategic communications skills, even small volunteer organizations can succeed in making their cases to the public and to policy-makers—particularly when they collaborate with other like-minded groups.

Since the beginning, CCMC has been supported primarily by large donors and foundation grants for long-term, multi-year projects. Working both domestically and worldwide, CCMC has developed and implemented dozens of creative, successful communications campaigns that resulted in impressive policy victories.

As anthropologist and feminist Margaret Mead famously said:

"Never doubt that a small group of thoughtful, committed citizens can change the world. Indeed, it is the only thing that ever has."

CCMC was founded on this belief, and has proven it true time and again. Technology may have made information available in a heartbeat and communications with people two continents away as easy as talking to a next-door neighbor, but we believe nothing is more powerful than individuals working together to make their dreams of fairness and equality real. Here at CCMC, as we embark on a new millennium and set forward our vision for the year 2020 and beyond, the hardware and software may change, but our principles and our commitment to a better world remain constant.

CCMC is a 501 (c)(3) nonprofit organization, and donations are tax deductible. If you are interested in making a donation, please contact our development office at (202) 326-8700.
